Weekend Fun: Bodega Bay

Ahhh... returning to work on Monday is so much easier after having two full days off! We spent a gorgeous few days in Bodega Bay this weekend-- Mason's first time seeing the ocean.
The amazing house we got to stay in was on a golf course and was a 5 minute walk to the beach. Does it get any better??? Tage and my grandpa Carroll don't think so.Mason spent lots of time on the carpet showing the grandpas and grandmas how he can now get up on his knees and scoot backwards. Once in a while he'll get both lets going and hop forward. Guess what we'll be doing next weekend? Getting down on our hands and knees and baby-proofing the house.
Mase worked up quite an appetite and wanted some of Grandpa Flint's cantaloupe. Yum! Ready for our walk down to the waves.
Nothing like feet in the sand. The water was cold!
Who needs the gym when you've got a 20 pound baby to lug around?
This past weekend happened to be the Bodega Seafood, Art and Wine Festival and if you know our family, you know we don't pass up fresh seafood or good wine. The temperature difference between the breezy bay and the actual town of Bodega was extreme. We were sweaty, but having a good time wine tasting none-the-less. Mason got to meet our friends Jena and Danny.
Back to the ocean on Sunday morning to play in the sand.
Grandpa Flint and Nanna brought lots of fruit and vegetables from their gardens. Mason could not eat this fig fast enough.

Weekend Fun

Homemade Ice Cream... Farmers Market... Baseball Game
After reading this post on The Larson Lingo I was inspired to get an ice cream maker. Tage has ice cream almost every night and I figured it would be more cost effective, healthier and more fun to make our own. I found this one on Craigslist for $25. It was brand new, still in the box, came with an extra freezing bowl and the seller even brought it to me! I can't wait to try a peach sorbet from the organic peaches we got at the farmers market.
Sunday we took Mason to his first AAA baseball game. I didn't expect him to last the whole game but he napped from about the 5th through 8th innings and was happy and playing the rest of the game. Our team didn't win, but it was a gorgeous day none-the-less.
Mason was thirsty! These pictures are from Auntie Lindsey's I-Phone and they were taken at the end of the game so parts of his Giants jersey (thanks Auntie Heidi) had come off by then. I'll post more pictures when I have a chance, and for now, leave you with this one...

Homemade yogurt-- seriously!

"Why would you do that?"

That was my friend Lindsey's response when I told her what I had planned yesterday. We meet a few days a week at the local college campus and run (um, okay sometimes we walk). She asked what I was going to do on my day off and I told her I was going to make yogurt. Like make it from scratch. At home.

So in reply to Lindsey's question I explained that it was my idea of fun. Which it is... I'm sick, I know. But it's also cost-effective considering I eat it almost every morning for breakfast and make fruit smoothies for Tage when he wants a healthy snack that doesn't consist of chocolate.

I found A Year of Slow Cooking through The Larson Lingo and happened across this post on how to make yogurt in your slow cooker. It sounded easy. A little weird, but easy. So I tried it!
You start out with a half-gallon of milk (8 cups) and put it in the slow cooker on low for 2 1/2 hours. (This is an all-day process, or I guess you could do it over night.) I used non-fat organic milk and you have to be sure NOT to get "ultra pasteurized". Don't ask me why. I just follow directions.

After 2 1/2 hours you unplug the slow cooker and let it sit for another 3 hours. Go to the park. When you come home and the 3 hours have passed, you remove about 2 cups of the warm milk from the slow cooker and mix in 1/2 a cup of yogurt with active cultures (I used TJ's organic vanilla). Whisk the yogurt and milk together and pour back into the slow cooker. I also added a package of pectin at this point because I was using non-fat milk as opposed to full-fat and I wanted to make sure it thickened up. (I have to admit it was an accident. I would have used full-fat but I was so consumed with finding non ultra-pasteurized that I wasn't really paying attention to much else.)

Replace the lid on the slow cooker and insulate the whole thing with a towel. Let it sit there getting all cultured-up for 8 full hours. That's it! There was actual yogurt in there at 8:30PM last night. I had also added a teaspoon of vanilla extract when I added the yogurt base but I don't think it was enough to make a difference in the flavor. It tastes like plain yogurt.
I would suggest enjoying it with fresh fruit or honey but it's a little on the watery side so I think if you tried to blend the fruit into the yogurt it would just end up being a smoothie instead of having any kind of yogurt consistency. I eat mine each morning with granola, ground flaxseed meal, and fruit.

Next time I think I'm going to halve the recipe and try it with whole milk so I have a batch for Mason. Speaking of the little peanut...
This was Mason's first experience with the swings at the park. He was content just to chill out there and let the breeze sway him back and forth. Of course my favorite part was pushing him back and forth and getting to smack him with a kiss every time he swung my way.Not too sure about those rocking toys yet, but happy sitting there checking everything out. Another first yesterday: chicken. Linds and I picked up some organic chicken wings at the farmers market a few Sundays ago and I cooked them, minced some of the meat up and mixed it with potatoes. This was after the second bite...
The cell phone picture doesn't do it justice but I had it readily available and wanted to capture the moment rather than run around trying to find my camera. I don't think it helped that I was laughing so hard there were tears in my eyes. Doesn't that look just say it all?

Weekend Fun

Church carnivals bring me back to when I was a kid. We grew up on the same street as a catholic church that had a big festival each year and it seemed like the few dollars we took with us lasted hours. This year we took Mason to the church carnival near our new home.
BINGO! Okay not really. But Tage was really close to winning the $250 black-out Bingo game. He already had his 47" flat screen picked out. Oh well, maybe next year.
Mason enjoyed the sights and sounds and all the people-watching. The people at our table enjoyed Mason's "Lock up your daughters" onesie (thanks Aunties Kim, Heidi and Lindsey!)
Mommy enjoyed the nachos-- nature's perfect food. :)

Saturday Smile

Speaking of faces... I feel like there should be a thought bubble included with this one that you can fill in on your own. :)

This was taken yesterday after a long day with Uncle Jared. Only one melt-down that resulted from not enough sleep coupled with too little milk, Jared did an awesome job with his little nephew. We got Mason home last night, took a quick bath, and he was OUT.

We are so thankful for our awesome families who step in to care for Mase! Jared, Kelsey, Wendy and Celenia, we can't thank you enough to taking time out of your summer to help out. When you guys have kids, just know that you have child care ANY TIME you need it. :)

It's only the PRE-season people.

And yet, upon arriving home tonight, I found my son in this...

Sporting Roethlisberger's number, watching the game with Dad.

Apparently it is never too early to get them started.

Just don't tell Grandpa Flint.

Mason has learned to say "Mama" and "Dada".

"Niners" is next.

That face

From the day he was born, Mason has entertained us with some highly expressive facial expressions. Here are two of my recent favorites. (Both are from our camera phones so the quality isn't great, but you get the idea.)

"Enough is enough, Dad. Please stop trying to feed me zucchini. I'm serious."

"But Mom, I slept for a WHOLE 20 minutes! I feel great! Now lets quit this 'napping' nonsense and go play."

Mason's First: Sushi

Okay not really. But his first sushi experience, how about that? We met my brother, Jared, and cousin, Cylie, for lunch this week. Mason was such a big boy sitting in the high chair!
Uncle Jared, teaching him how to use chopsticks.
Cylie couldn't believe how much Mason had grown since the last time she saw him (when he was only 3 weeks old!)

Mason's Room

The details are complete and Mason's room is finally finished! Take a peek...
Continuing with the "circles" theme, I used scrapbook paper to add Mason's name to the wall above the crib next to the mobile. I did the same with the little owl below. (That guy is only temporary until I can get Heather to come over and paint one on the wall for me... hint, hint... ;)
The twig that owl is perched on is actually my first fishing pole! My great grandpa (whom Mason's middle name, JD, is in honor of) made it for me when I was barely able to walk. It consists of that stick with some fishing line and a swivel attached to the end. That stick held a place above my grandpa's doorbell until he passed away in 2005, after which it found a new home above the doorbell in whatever home I lived in. I knew it had to have a special spot in Mason's room. There is the rocker Tage found on craigslist, the impressions we had done when Mase was a month old, Mason's first teddy bear, and a plant (because Tage needs them all over the house.)

The painting above the dresser is one of Tage's favorites and he insisted it needed to go in there for Mason to enjoy. The pair of green dressers were from Tage's mom-- he and his siblings used them (over 30 years ago... :) I didn't even have to paint them, I love the knicks and scuffs. Finally, there is a little reading nook in the corner beneath of of the windows. I sewed the covers for those pillows while Mason napped yesterday. The fabric on the back is brown. I wanted to add that pom pom fringe onto both pillows but A) I didn't buy enough of them and B) those things take forever to work with!
I love how everything turned out. The brown border on the walls took a while (and required a LOT of blue tape) but it is exactly the look I wanted. Each wall is "framed" and the rounded corners give it a little bit of softness. All I need now are some round rugs-- I'm thinking a couple of them in varied colors and sizes, so let me know if you know where to find some.

There is actually also a bookshelf next to the rocking chair, I'm not sure how I missed including a picture. It's full of books and stuffed animals already but the best part is the lava lamp (not even kidding) on top. Fun!

P.S. The only "new" items in the room are Mason's crib, bedding, and curtains. Yay for hand-me-downs and craigslist deals!

Quoted

January 12, 2009

"My kid will like broccoli." - Tegan
And guess what? He does! Tage laughed when I stood there in the kitchen, 8 months pregnant, and made that declaration. I'm sure it was after I had served broccoli as a side dish for the third time that week or something and Tage was less than excited about it.

At any rate, the quote made it to our chalk board/quote board back in January so when Mason tried broccoli this week I was certainly going to capture it for posterity (unless he hated it, in which case I was prepared to "forget" I'd ever said the quote above.)

Mason's (Mommy DIY) Mobile

Since we moved (yes, again) I've been slowly working on Mason's room. He will actually have a cute, coordinated, fun nursery one of these days very soon. One of my projects was to make a mobile inspired by the circles in his Target Dwell Studio crib bedding.
As you can imagine, this involved cutting out a lot of circles. I mean a lot. This project took a while but I think the outcome was totally worth it. First I selected paper colors that matched the colors of the bedding, then I traced (and traced... and traced...) about 200-1 1/2" circles.
The circles are strung on fishing line suspended from a 12" embroidery loop which I painted brown (the accent color from the walls.) You could probably use a sewing machine to connect the circles but our new house is small and I'm noisy enough on my own, without the machine. I used tape to attach the circles to the fishing line and was able to work on it while sitting in the living room watching TV with Tage in the evenings.
There ended up being 19 strings with anywhere from 8 to 13 circles attached. The photo above is Mason's view of the mobile. The finished mobile was hung on Saturday and Mason found it highly entertaining! Of course that meant he wasn't interested in going to sleep either...

Hopefully the nursery will be complete by Wednesday and I can share the rest!
